Volvo is so enthusiastic about its hometown’s best-known coffee roaster, Da Matteo, that it flies a couple of baristas and a lot of coffee beans to major international auto shows and passes out joe on press days. There’s a lot to get your attention at an auto show, but even jaded attendees will agree that Volvo brews the best cup.

Consumers seem to think the same, even though the coffee served at your local dealer probably came from a Keurig cup. Sales are way up this year, buoyed by the brand’s hot XC90 (admittedly, its other models aren’t fairing quite as well). A host of new products are on the way, and for once Volvo has something to sell other than safety.

Volvo wasn’t interested in picking flowers. It wanted the automotive arm of truck manufacturer DAF, which would include its assembly plant, its Renault engines, and the first mainstream application of the CVT gearbox. Volvo acquired DAF’s car business over the course of a few years in the early 1970s and, in typical Volvo safety-oriented style, it slapped big bumpers and head restraints on the little DAF 66 and rebadged it as the Volvo 66. The Dutch assembly plant would grow to include a partnership with Mitsubishi in the early ’90s. Today, it operates as NedCar and builds Mini Coopers for BMW.

Volvo is no longer involved in NedCar or DAF (which sold its CVT division to Bosch, by the way), but its acquisition of DAF helped ensure the success of CVTs. Ironically, even though Volvo’s investment helped make CVTs mainstream, the Swedish automaker’s affair with them was brief, and today it utilizes only conventional automatics.

That’s not to say that safety hasn’t served the brand well. Volvo was first to market with three-point seat belts, side-curtain airbags, and blind-spot monitoring. Moreover, the brand is a huge proponent of camera- and radar-based active safety tech (ignoring that one time an early system failed during a media presentation – oops).

All of these features are commonplace today, but one item that you might not associate with the brand is the invention of the rear-facing child seat. Working with a local university researcher who was inspired by the rear-facing seats used by astronauts, Volvo designed the first seat intended to hold children in place in a wreck in 1967. The first one, which looks rudimentary today, was offered as an accessory for the Volvo Amazon. Volvo later refined the concept by creating built-in booster seats for larger children, something the automaker continues to offer today as a factory-installed option on many of its vehicles.

A group of 50 cars closed down the San Francisco Bay Bridge on Sunday evening to put on a road show. What’s really remarkable is that none of the offending drivers have been arrested. Yet.

A road show is when several cars coordinate together to block off traffic. The open lanes are then used as a stage for burnouts, donuts, and other tricks. Once these jokers have their fun, traffic is allowed to open back up. In this case, five drivers worked together to block all lanes on the Bay Bridge, SFGate reported. Once traffic was stopped, 50 show offs flooded the bridge.

The latest government accounting finds that Takata would need to recall an additional 85 million airbags if the supplier can’t prove they’re safe, according to Reuters. The Feds could require Takata to replace all of its parts containing ammonium nitrate propellant; so far, automakers have only fixed vehicles with certain models of the inflators.

Over its 89 years, Volvo has been closely connected to a number of automakers – most notably Ford, which ran the company for a decade, and its current owner Geely. But Volvo is most closely linked to its longtime competitor, Saab.

In typical Swedish fashion, this rivalry was not marked by bitter animosity. The two companies were located about an hour apart from one another, with Volvo calling cosmopolitan Gothenburg home and Saab camping out in much smaller Trollhättan (known today as Trollywood for its role in the Swedish film industry).

In fact, Volvo’s aerospace division built engines for Saab’s military jets. At the time, both plane manufacturers operated under the same umbrella as their car-building divisions. That compatriotism exists today, even though Saab is defunct. If there’s currently a Saab in your garage, or even if you’ve owned one in the last six months, Volvo’s American arm considers you a friend of Sweden and will offer you the same $1,000 “loyalty” bonus toward the purchase of a new car that it extends to its current owners.

What is HMO Dental Insurance Plans?

HMO (Health Maintenance Organizations) are networks of dentist under contact with the dental insurance company that offer dental services at a pre-determined rate.

With the HMO dental insurance plan, you do not have the option to choose your own dentist. However, the HMO is usually less expensive.

Toyota is recalling 58,510 vehicles from model year 2016. Total affected vehicles include 16,880 Avalon and 41,630 Camry sedans.

The Problem: Affected vehicles have an incorrectly calibrated Occupant Classification System in the passenger’s side front seat. The OCS activates or deactivates the passenger’s side airbag depending on the weight of the passenger in the seat. If the calibration is out of whack, the system won’t arm properly and the airbag might not go off in the event of an accident

Chevy’s 2016 Camaro SS is a fantastic piece of automotive engineering. It is also, apparently, very, very fast. This latter fact was perfectly illustrated when, on April 8, a Camaro SS driver was nailed in Two Harbors, Minnesota for doing 171 mph.  According to WFAA, the unnamed speed demon was flying down Highway 61 near Two Harbors when Hermantown, MN Deputy Police Chief Shawn Padden clocked him at an eye-watering 171 mph

Earned Premium is the portion of a policy premium that has been used to actually buy coverage, or that the insurance company has “earned.” For instance, if you have a six-month policy that you paid for in advance, two months into the policy, there would be two months of earned premium. The remaining four months of premium is called unearned premium.

Some fullsize SUV owners are getting sick, thanks to a buffeting and vibration problem in 2015 model year examples of the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, Cadillac Escalade, and GMC Yukon. According to owners’ complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the issue can vary from an annoying vibration inside the cabin to an experience so severe that it leads to dizziness and headaches.

Ram is recalling a total of 18,121 examples of the 2015 ProMaster with production dates between October 1, 2014, and June 17, 2015. These include 16,114 of them in the US, 1,498 in Canada, 503 in Mexico, and 6 outside the NAFTA region.

The Problem: The ignition switch can intermittently lose electrical contact, and this can potentially cause the vans to stall. If the problem occurs, the vehicles might also lose functionality of the airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, and instruments

Grace Period: Grace period is the time, usually 31 days  during which a policy remains in force after the premium is due but not paid. The policy lapses as of the day the premium was originally due unless the premium is paid before the end of the 31 days or the insured dies. This is not a “free-insurance” period.

Poland will soon get its first Tesla Superchargers. A photo on Reddit appears to show multiple parking stalls with Superchargers under wraps at an Orlen fuel station. Tesla recently signed a deal with the German branch of Polish oil refiner Orlen to install Superchargers at fuel stations in Germany, and it appears the focus is shifting eastward to Poland. Some question whether it makes sense for Tesla to focus on Poland, where the cities have a lot of high-rise dwellings and few private garages. Tesla, however, is known for taking risks on building infrastructure as an investment in future customers.
